R3030 Ridgid One handed Reciprocating Saw

Client:  Home Depot
Skills:  Problem Solving, Ergonomics, Industrial Design

Project Scope: To create the first to the US market, one handed recip saw, geared towards the professional contractor.

Initial Research

I built mock walls and set up plumbing to represent typical items that might be cut by a contractor.  Dozens of users were allowed to make cuts using a competitive saw sourced from Japan.  Our team made observations and recorded all feedback for possible improvements. Issues observed included: insufficient  grip size, user's hands too near the blade, saw bar failure, and vibration points on the handle that cause irritation on users knuckles.
